Kurilskoye Lake at the Yuzhno-Kamchatsky Biosphere Federal Reserve in southern Kamchatka is home to one of the largest populations of brown bears in the world. For the last 2 years, successful enforcement programs by a team of professional rangers has dismantled the salmon caviar and bear poaching system that existed for years around the lake and in the reserve. Explore Kamchatka supports their efforts through contributions of funds, material goods like fuel for their boats or snow mobiles so that this program can continue. The Kamchatka Ecotourism Society is embarking on an ambitious visitor and local stakeholder information project to educate guests and locals about the significance of the designation by UNESCO of the 6 protected areas as World Heritage Sites. The goal is to increase understanding of the worldwide significance of these sites to ensure their protection and appreciation, and also to provide needed public information through bi-lingual signage at the Yelizovo airport, and locations in the Yelizovo community.
