Kamchatka and RFE Capitals
15 Days - Russian Far East
Groups 6 to 16 people
Explore Kamchatka, an unspoiled
peninsula with 20 steaming active volcanoes,
lies on the Ring of Fire where the North Pacific
plate dives beneath the Okhotsk Plate creating
one of the world’s most dynamic volcanic
regions.
Your trip begins in the port city of Vladivostok,
originally a military outpost to protect Russia’s
interests in the Far East. Vladivostok, like
Kamchatka, was closed to other Russians till
1991 due to its strategic importance to the
Soviet military.
Embark on the Trans-Siberian Railway chugging
north to Khabarovsk. Named after a 17th century
Russian explorer, this city now is home to
over 700,000 people. A two-day stay allows
an exploration of the city center as well as
a journey by hydrofoil up the Amur River to
meet the Nanai, the oldest ethnic group in
the Russian Far East.
A short flight brings us to Petropavlovsk-
Kamchatsky, a town surrounded by three sky-piercing
volcanoes, Koryaksky, Avachinsky and Kozelsky.
Upon arrival in Kamchatka, travel north to
the village of Esso located inside the Bystrinsky
Nature Park. Esso and nearby Anavgai are home
to the Even people as well as some Russian
and smaller groups of Itelmen and Koryak Natives.
150 years ago, the Even, reindeer herders from
the northwest of Kamchatka, immigrated to this
high valley in the Central Kamchatka Mountain
Range. Weather permitting, you’ll helicopter
to visit the reindeer herders and will visit
the cultural center of these people.
Our adventure continues with a helicopter ride
to the volcanic Valley of the Geysers inside
the Kronotsky World Biosphere Preserve. This
7-km long valley of geothermal activity only
discovered in1941, this area features numerous
geysers, steaming hot springs, mud kettles
and aromatic sulfur pools.
We fly back to Vladivostok and make a day trip
to the Amur Tiger Preserve before toasting
the conclusion of our adventure.
