Bakhening Volcano to Timonovsky Hot Springs Ski Tour
Groups 4-10 Cross
the spectacular Central Kamchatka Mountain
range and ski down into the Timonovsky Hot Springs
Snow Sheep Reserve and out the Avacha River Valley. This is a trip for experienced backcountry skiers who can carry a backpack with their camping gear and their food. Your guide is Feodor Farberov, one of Kamchatka’s most qualified mountaineers and skiers. Feodor has lived on Kamchatka all his life and grew up with his volcanologist parents scaling the Peninsula’s peaks. He has many first ascents and ski descents on Kamchatka’s volcanoes and has climbed many of the Soviet Union’s major peaks as well as Denali in Alaska. Feodor has just returned from studying in the Adventure Guide Program at the University of College of the Cariboo in Kamloops, BC. For groups of 6 or more there will be an assistant guide. 2 Early morning departure by car, drive
2.5 hours to 208 km on the road to Milkovo in
the Central Kamchatka Valley. First day, ski
about 16-18 km to the base of Bakhening Volcano,
a beautiful extinct cone that is your entrance
to the mountains. Camp.Day 3 Cross Maisky Pass, elevation 1261 m and descend to Medvijy Lake, 8-10 km. Camp Day 4 Ski 8 km along Avachinsky Lake to below Timonovsky Pass. Camp. Day 5 Ski in the spectacular area around Avachinsky Lake, Camp. Day 6-7 Reserve days for bad weather. If good weather, either push on or ski around in the area as there are many beautiful slopes. Day 8 Cross Timonovsky Pass 1500 m 14 km to hot springs. Area was set aside to protect brown mountain sheep. The reserve features high mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams. Coming in from the direction you’ll enter, its doubtful you’ll see any other ski tracks, few folks make this entrance to the hot springs. The hot springs is nestled in the side of a mountainside. Its famous for it’s healing properties. Nearby is also a mineral water spring and locals revere the water for it’s many healthful qualities. Day 9 Rest at hot springs, ski as desired. Day
10-11 Ski down the Sredny Avacha River Valley. Overnight along the
way. From this point a snow machine will come and take your packs and escort you the final leg of the trip. Ski down a succession of tundra before crossing the Central Avacha River by a hand-pulled 2-seater cable tram. From here it is a long, flat ski down the collective farm fields to the village of Razdolniy. Overnight in Yelizovo. Day 12-13 Ski the volcanoes around Yelizovo/PK with either snow machine support or heliski. The snow machine and heliski are add-ons and we’ll give you a quote if you wish either of these options. These volcanoes include the Avachinsky group of volcanoes and Vilyuchik Volcano. Day 14 Departure day. Airport transfer. Included: Invitation and voucher for receiving your visa, all in-Kamchatka ground transportation except snow machine support on days 12-14, satellite phone for emergency purposes, airport transfers; guide, interpreter, in-town meals and accommodations. Not included: Visa, international or trans-Russian airline flights, food while on the trail unless requested, alcohol, tips, snow machine support other than day 13, travel insurance.
