Visit 2 of the territories that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Volcanoes of Kamchatka” for a microcosm of much of what make Kamchatka so special. Start your trip by ascending the Avachinsky Volcano (2741 m) in Nalychevo Park, and spend several days enjoying the hot springs, trails and cozy cabins in the park. Drive deep into Kamchatka on sustainable public transportation to Esso in the Bystrinsky Nature Park. Here you will hike, meet the Even aboriginal people, raft the stunningly beautiful Bystraya River, and be charmed by the village atmosphere. Don’t forget the hot springs, too!
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Kamchatka, transfer 15 minutes drive to guest house at Bolshakova Street in Yelizovo. Shared twin room.
Day 2 Breakfast, transfer to pass between Avachinsky and Koriyakskiy Volcanoes, just inside Nalychevo Nature Park. Check into hostel. Hike in area. B, L, D
Day 3 700 departure to ascend 2471m Avachinsky Volcano. Not a technical climb, but steep going up/down. Overnight at hostel. B,L,D.
Day 4-5 Hike over the north side of the pass down to the center of Nalychevo Nature Park. Camp en route. B,L,D.
Days 6-7 Overnight in park cabins, day hikes as you wish on the trails in the park center. Enjoy the 3 wild hot springs in the park center. B,L,D.
Day 8-9 Depart the park center, hiking 22 km each day crossing the Pinachevo Pass (1409 m). Camp night 8. Arrive at park border and transfer to guest house in Yelizovo. B,L,D.
Day 10 730 breakfast. 900 transfer by car to Yelizovo bus terminal for 930 departure over 600 km to Esso. Stop en route in Milkovo where you can buy a hot lunch at the local cafe. Continue driving, with total drive time 8-10 hours, depending on road conditions. Your guide will meet the bus and escort you to your guest house. The room has 2 twin beds, shower-toilet facilities, small refrigerator, microwave, tea kettle. The public geothermal hot pool is directly next to this guest house. Day 9 Get acquainted with this charming village of 1500 residents, by visiting the District Museum, and then the Bystrinsky Nature Park Visitor Center. Walking tour of village. Meals at local cafe. Day 11 Rafting on Esso Bystraya River. Walk to the Koriyak culture camp Chau Chiv and put in by 1000 for a beautiful rafting trip, without any white water. Includes tea and fish soup prepared on the trip. The rafting ends at the Even aboriginal village of Anavgai and walk to the Menedek culture center. On arrival have a welcoming and “cleansing” ceremony, see the examples of traditional reindeer herding implements, have an excursion of the camp with explanations about the culture. After wild herbal tea with the hosts, have a master class. Choose from wood carving, beading, and birch bark weaving. Drive back to Esso. B,L,D.
Day 12 Circular hike in Bystrinsky Nature Park to see the autumn colors, tundra and high country. If the sky is clear, we will be able to see the Kljuchevskoy group of volcanoes from the plateau. Also, the hike is a circuit. Return to the guest house in Esso. B,L,D.
Day 13 7:30 AM departure from Esso on the public bus back to Yelizovo. Transfer in Yelizovo to the guest house. Dinner at guest house. B,L,D.
