Starichkov Island is a natural monument island located outside of Avacha Bay to the south. The island is named for the large colony of Ancient Murrelets, a small nocturnal relative of the larger and more easily seen Common and Thick-billed Murres, and Tufted Puffins, which also make their nesting colony on this island.
Drive to the port in Petropavlovsk and board boat, which has space both on deck and shelter of a cabin, onboard toilet. Exit the bay, passing the 3 Brothers rock pinnacles, and cruise about 2.5 hours to Starichkov Island. Besides the species mentioned above, you will see many gulls, cormorants, Black-legged kittiwakes, and possibly nesting Steller Sea Eagles. The boat will cruise around the island, giving you a chance to see many birds. Often the boat will motor over near the coast and give visitors a chance to try deep sea fishing. Return to the harbor after 6 hours. Drive back to the hotel and enjoy dinner at your hotel.
Note: weather and wave conditions may affect the timing for this boat tour. Also the Russian Navy occasionally closes the narrow entrance/exit to Avacha Bay for their maneuvers, delaying the trip.
Confirm the trip has the minimum needed to operate before buying your airline tickets to Kamchatka.
Price includes: Transfer to/from the port, box lunch, and boat fee.
